Best Welding Helmet Under $200: 6 Auto Darkening Picks, Ratings Checked
Six auto darkening helmets under $200, compared on the ANSI or CSA rating each listing states, viewing area, shade range, sensors and warranty.
This guide is for hobby, farm and home shop welders who want a dependable auto darkening helmet without paying pro prices. How we scored them
Each helmet is scored out of 100 on performance, build, value, safety rating and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. For helmets, safety points need a stated ANSI Z87.1 or CSA Z94.3 rating. A rating the listing does not state scores nothing.

Buying guide: what matters in a welding helmet under $200
A rating you can check
Of the 13 helmet listings we looked at under $200, 6 mentioned an ANSI or CSA standard and 4 named ANSI Z87.1 specifically. Three of our picks state a rating, and two of those, the ARCCAPTAIN LY800F and YESWELDER LYG-L600A, name both ANSI Z87.1 and CSA Z94.3. The other three may well be certified, but their listings do not say, so check the marking on the helmet before you rely on it.
Viewing area
Views here run from 3.64 x 1.67 inches to a panoramic lens with side windows. A larger view helps with fit up and out of position work. For bench work on small parts, a smaller lens with a magnifier can work well.
Shade range for your process
Check that the dark shade range covers your work. Low amp TIG needs lighter shades than heavy stick or MIG. The Miller lists a separate cut range, 5 to 8, which suits plasma cutting, and the YESWELDER and Miller list a shade 3 grind setting.
Sensors and switching speed
Two sensors can miss an arc when your hand or the work blocks one, so four or more is better for out of position welding. Switching speeds here run from 1/23,000 to 1/30,000 second, all fast enough that differences are small in practice.
Warranty
Two picks state a year or more: Miller at 3 years and Hobart at 2 years limited. Both ARCCAPTAIN helmets state 180 days. Across the 13 helmet listings, 7 stated a warranty term, and 4 of those were 6 months or less.
About eye protection. An auto darkening helmet only protects you when its shade suits the process and amperage. Check the shade chart in the manual, wear safety glasses underneath, and replace cover lenses when they pit or crack. A rating claim should be marked on the helmet itself, so check it before you rely on it. See the OSHA welding overview and our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are cheap auto darkening helmets safe?
A helmet is only as safe as its rating and condition. Look for ANSI Z87.1 or CSA Z94.3 marked on the helmet, use the right shade, and replace cover lenses when damaged. Price alone does not tell you: the lowest priced pick here states both ratings.
What does 1/1/1/1 mean?
It is the EN 379 optical class, covering optical quality, light diffusion, shade consistency and angle dependence. A 1 in each position is the best rating. Four of the six picks state 1/1/1/1.
How many arc sensors do I need?
Two is enough for bench work in front of you. Four or more helps when welding out of position or around obstructions, where a blocked sensor can leave the lens light.
Can I use a welding helmet for plasma cutting?
Yes, if it has a cut shade setting in the range your plasma cutter manual calls for, often shade 5 to 9. The Miller Classic lists cut shades 5 to 8, and the ARCCAPTAIN LY800F and Sunstac offer a 5 to 9 range.
Do I need safety glasses under a welding helmet?
Yes. Safety glasses protect your eyes when the helmet is up for chipping, grinding or setup, and they are standard practice under a welding helmet.
