Best Gifts for Welders: 5 Shop Upgrades They Will Use

Five gifts a welder will actually use: two helmets, two leather jackets and a rolling cart, compared on the safety standards, materials and sizes each listing states.

Four gifts for welders shown as product cards with their Gear Scores: Jackson Insight 8.1/10, SHINE Leather Helmet 7.7/10, Lincoln Heavy Duty 7.7/10, Lincoln Traditional 7.5/10

The best gifts for welders are things they would buy for the shop themselves but keep putting off: a better helmet, a proper leather jacket or a cart that keeps the machine, the gas and the tools together. Below are five, compared on what each listing states.

How we scored them

How to choose the best gifts for welders

Start with what they already own

Find out what they own and what size they wear before you buy. A helmet with a scratched lens, a cotton sweatshirt used as a welding jacket, or a gas bottle tied to a bench leg are all clear hints.

Helmets: look for the standard, not the shade count

An auto-darkening helmet is only as good as its rating. In the US, look for ANSI Z87.1 on the helmet; in Canada, CSA Z94.3. The Jackson Insight states both, the SHINE states ANSI Z87.1. Optical class, written as four numbers such as 1/1/1/1, grades clarity, and lower numbers are better. For a deeper comparison, see our best auto-darkening welding helmet and best welding helmet under $200 guides. The standard shell Insight appears in the first; the narrow HSL shell version here is a separate listing.

Jackets: match the jacket to the work

  • Light MIG and TIG: a flame resistant cotton jacket or a hybrid with leather sleeves, such as the Lincoln K3106.
  • Stick, flux core and overhead work: leather where spatter lands, front, shoulders and sleeves, such as the Lincoln K2989.
  • Size: welding jackets are worn over work clothes, so check the size chart and the recipient’s chest measurement rather than guessing from a shirt size.

The ASTM D6413 rating that both Lincoln jackets state applies to the cotton fabric, and is a flame resistance standard for textiles.

Carts and storage: measure first

Measure the machine’s footprint and the bottle’s diameter before buying a cart. If the recipient likes to build things, a welding cart is also a classic first project; our welding projects for beginners guide walks through it. For a larger work surface, see our best welding table for a home shop.

Should you buy a welder as a gift?

Only if you know exactly what they want. A welder has to suit their outlet, metal and process. If they are starting out, our best welder for beginners is a good place to look together, and our Black Friday welder deal checklist helps if you are buying during the sales.

Gifts by budget

For smaller gifts, see our best gifts for welders under $50 and best gifts for welders under $100.

Fit and rating. Protective gear only protects within its rating. Check the marking on the helmet itself, replace cover lenses when they pit or crack, and replace jackets that are burned through or soaked with oil. Gas cylinders on a cart must stay chained upright. See the OSHA welding overview and our Safety Disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good gift for a welder who has everything?

An upgrade of something they use every day, such as a rated helmet, a leather jacket for heavy work or a cart. Replace the oldest or most worn item.

What do welders need most?

Eye and skin protection first: a rated helmet, leather gloves and a flame resistant jacket. Then fit up tools and storage. Our best welding gloves for MIG guide covers gloves, which are also a good gift if you know their size.

Is a welding helmet a good gift?

Yes, if it is an upgrade and it states a standard such as ANSI Z87.1. Avoid buying a helmet identical to the one they have. If you are unsure of their preference, a helmet with a variable shade and a grind mode, like the Jackson Insight, covers weld and grind work in one hood.

Are leather welding helmets safe?

The shell is leather, but eye protection comes from the lens. The SHINE states ANSI Z87.1 and takes a 2 x 4 1/4 inch lens; use the shade the manual recommends for the process and amperage.

What welding gift is good for a beginner?

Protective gear they will keep using, such as a hybrid jacket like the Lincoln K3106, or practice and fit up gifts from our gifts under $50 list. Save big tools until they know what they enjoy welding.
