Best Welder for Beginners: 6 Synergic Picks That Set Themselves Up
Six synergic wire feed welders for a first machine, compared on how they set themselves up, what is in the box, input voltage and warranty.
This guide is for people buying their first welder: a homeowner, a farmer or a hobbyist who wants to fix gates, build a cart or learn on scrap. Every machine here is a synergic wire feed welder, meaning it sets at least one setting for you, which is the single biggest help when you start. How we scored them
Each machine is scored out of 100 on performance, build, value, safety listing and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. A spec the listing does not publish scores nothing.

Buying guide: choosing a first welder
Why a wire feed welder first
A wire feed welder feeds filler wire through the gun when you pull the trigger, so you control travel speed and angle while the machine handles the filler. That is why most first machines are MIG or flux core. Stick and TIG modes on the same machine are worth having for later, but they take more practice.
What synergic setup really does
Synergic machines link settings so you adjust one and the machine sets the other. The depth varies. The ARCCAPTAIN MIG135 and WELDPRO MIG160 ask for the metal thickness, the ARCCAPTAIN MIG200 asks for wire diameter and gas, and the two YESWELDER machines match voltage to the wire speed you set. The more a machine asks about the job, the less you have to guess.
Flux core or gas MIG
Flux core needs no gas and works outdoors, which makes it the cheapest way to start. Gas MIG gives cleaner welds with less spatter on thin sheet, but you need a cylinder and a regulator, which none of these listings include. Four of the six picks run both. If you only want flux core, see our best flux core welder guide.
110V or dual voltage
Two picks are 110V only, and four list 110V and 220V. A household outlet is enough to learn on thin and medium steel. If you expect to weld 1/4 inch steel regularly, a dual voltage machine gives you somewhere to go once a 240V circuit is installed by a licensed electrician.
What else to buy
Two kits here include a helmet, the WELDPRO and the BILT HARD, and neither listing states an ANSI Z87.1 or CSA Z94.3 rating for it. Budget for a rated auto darkening helmet, see our best welding helmet under $200, plus leather MIG gloves, safety glasses, a flame resistant jacket, a wire brush, clamps and a fire extinguisher. Across the 8 listings in this guide’s final sample, 2 stated a warranty term and none stated a CSA, UL or ETL listing.
Before you strike your first arc. Wear a helmet with the right shade for the process and amperage, safety glasses underneath, leather gloves, long sleeves without synthetic fabric and closed shoes. Weld with good ventilation, clear anything flammable from the area, and keep an extinguisher within reach. See the OSHA welding overview and our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the easiest type of welding for a beginner?
Most people find wire feed welding, MIG or flux core, the easiest to start with, because the machine feeds the filler and synergic control helps with settings. Stick takes more practice to strike and hold an arc, and TIG needs both hands and often a foot pedal.
Can a beginner learn on a 110V welder?
Yes. A 110V machine is enough to learn on thin and medium steel. Check the breaker your circuit has and the machine’s manual before you plug in.
Do I need gas to start welding?
No. Every machine here runs gasless flux core wire. Four of the six can also run solid wire with shielding gas, which needs a cylinder and regulator bought separately.
Is the helmet that comes with a welder kit good enough?
Not unless it carries a rating you can check. Neither of the two kit helmets here has an ANSI Z87.1 or CSA Z94.3 rating stated in the listing, so check the marking on the helmet itself or buy a rated one.
How long does it take to learn to weld?
Many hobbyists can run a usable flux core bead on clean mild steel after a few practice sessions. Building strong, consistent welds takes much longer, and a local community college class speeds things up. Practice on scrap of the same thickness as your project.
