How we scored them
Each machine is scored out of 100 on performance, build, value, safety listing and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. A spec the listing does not publish scores nothing. None of the six states a warranty term, so every machine here scores zero on warranty.

Buying guide: what matters in a TIG welder for aluminum
AC output and balance
On AC, the current alternates between a cleaning half that breaks up aluminum oxide and a penetrating half that puts heat into the joint. AC balance sets the split, and AC frequency sets how tight the arc is. Only LOTOS gives a balance range, 20 to 80%. All six list pulse, which helps control heat on thin sheet.
Output on 110V
All six advertise 110V and 220V, but only LOTOS states 110V output, 140A, and only TOOLIOM states the aluminum thickness on 110V, 1/8 inch. Aluminum soaks up heat quickly, so a 110V circuit limits how thick you can weld. Plan on a 240V circuit, installed by a licensed electrician, for regular work over 1/8 inch.
Foot pedal
A pedal lets you ease off as aluminum heats up, which is why most aluminum TIG welders use one. Weldpro and Bestarc include a pedal, LOTOS and TOOLIOM sell it separately, and PrimeWeld mentions pedal control without clearly saying it is in the box.
What else you need
TIG needs pure argon, a cylinder and a flowmeter or regulator. Only the PUWU lists a regulator in the box. You will also need tungsten suited to AC, filler rod matched to the alloy, a stainless brush kept only for aluminum and thin TIG gloves.
What the listings leave out
Of the 14 AC/DC TIG listings we looked at, 2 stated a warranty term, and neither is a pick here. Only Weldpro gave a duty cycle with an amperage, and none of the 14 stated a CSA, UL or ETL listing.
TIG and aluminum safety. TIG on aluminum produces intense UV light with little visible spatter, so cover all skin and use the shade the manual specifies for your amperage. Weld with good ventilation, keep argon cylinders chained upright, and clear anything flammable from the area. See the OSHA welding overview and our Safety Disclaimer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you TIG weld aluminum with a DC TIG welder?
Not in practice for most home shop work. DC TIG does not break up the oxide layer on aluminum, which is why every machine here offers AC output. A DC only machine is fine for steel and stainless.
How thick can these TIG welders weld aluminum?
Three listings give a rating: TOOLIOM at 1/8 inch on 110V and 3/16 inch on 220V, PrimeWeld at 1/4 inch, and LOTOS at 3/8 inch on 240V. None states a pass count. The other three give no aluminum rating.
Do I need a foot pedal to TIG weld aluminum?
It is not required, but it helps a lot because aluminum heats up as you weld and you need less current toward the end of a seam. Weldpro and Bestarc include one.
What gas do I need for TIG welding aluminum?
Pure argon is the standard shielding gas for TIG on aluminum. You also need a regulator or flowmeter, which only the PUWU includes here.
Is MIG with a spool gun easier than TIG for aluminum?
MIG with a spool gun is faster and easier to learn for thicker aluminum. TIG gives more control and cleaner welds on thin sheet. If you want MIG for aluminum, see our best MIG welder under $1000.
