How we scored them

Each machine is scored out of 100 on performance, build, value, safety listing and warranty, with the weights published on our How We Pick page. A spec the listing does not publish scores nothing.

Product Gear Score Perf. Build Value Safety Warranty
Eastwood MIG 180 Kit 64 24 16 14 0 10
ARCCAPTAIN MIG250DP 61 24 15 13 0 9

What you get for $500 to $1000

A duty cycle you can plan around

Of the 14 MIG listings we looked at between $500 and $1000, only 3 stated a duty cycle with an amperage: two for the same Eastwood machine, with and without a spool gun, and one for a stick welder. Among the MIG machines in this guide, only Eastwood publishes one: 30% at 90A on 120V, or about 3 minutes of welding in every 10. Paying more does not guarantee a published figure, so ask the seller before you buy if you run long seams.

Output on 120V

All six machines advertise dual voltage, but only Eastwood gives a 120V output range, 30 to 90A, and only ARCCAPTAIN’s MIG250DP says outright that the full 250A needs 220V. Two listings, the ARCCAPTAIN MIG250 and MIG205 Pro, show only 220 or 240 volts in their specification tables. If you plan to weld 1/4 inch steel and up, budget for a 240V circuit installed by a licensed electrician.

Aluminum: spool gun or push feed

Five of the six listings mention aluminum. The Eastwood kit includes a spool gun. The ARCCAPTAIN MIG250DP ships with a graphene liner and U groove rollers for pushing aluminum wire through the main torch. The rest need a spool gun bought separately, and the PrimeWeld listing is unclear on whether its gun is included.

Warranty in writing

This is where the extra money shows most clearly. Across the 14 listings, 8 stated a warranty term, against 6 of 13 below $500. Two machines here state 3 years, Eastwood and the ARCCAPTAIN MIG205 Pro, and two state 2 years. None of the 14 listings stated a CSA, UL or ETL listing, so no machine scores above zero for safety.

Before you strike an arc. Wear a helmet with the right shade for the process and amperage, flame resistant clothing and leather gloves, weld with good ventilation, and clear anything flammable from the area. See the OSHA welding overview and our Safety Disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a MIG welder under $1000 worth it over a $500 machine?

Only if the extra money buys something you will use. In this guide that means a stated 120V output and duty cycle (Eastwood), an included spool gun (Eastwood), aluminum ready push feed (ARCCAPTAIN MIG250DP) or a 3 year written warranty. Peak amperage alone is not a reason to spend more.

How much can these machines weld on 120V?

Only Eastwood says: 30 to 90A, and mild steel up to 3/16 inch, manufacturer rated. The other five listings do not state an output for 120V input, so do not assume the headline amperage applies on a household outlet.

Do I need a spool gun to MIG weld aluminum?

Not always. A spool gun keeps soft aluminum wire from tangling over a long liner. Some machines, like the ARCCAPTAIN MIG250DP here, ship with a liner and rollers for feeding aluminum through the main torch instead. The Eastwood kit includes a spool gun.

What does 30% at 90A mean?

It means the machine can weld about 3 minutes in every 10 at 90A before it needs to cool. At lower amperage the usable time is longer. A duty cycle without an amperage cannot be compared between machines.

Do these welders come with a gas regulator?

None of the six listings names a regulator in the box. Plan on a regulator and a cylinder if you want to run solid wire with shielding gas.
